2018 Commonwealth Games swimmer Ben Treffers’ pre-race ritual
I am not a superstitious person, so I don’t get too caught up in the specifics of my races, but I have a pretty set routine for preparing to compete.

One day out from competing, I have a light swim in the morning and then it is time for the dreaded shave down. The arduous process of clipping then shaving is bloody painful. I try get it out of the way early in the afternoon, so I can put my feet up and chill.

The morning of my race, I wake up at least three hours before I compete. I have a super plain breakfast, usually just toast, and then I have a hot shower to get warm.

After that, I head over to the pool two hours before my race, have a long stretch, roll and do shoulder rehab, and then I jump in for warm up for an hour before my race.

I start my warm up with a long loose swim, trying to get any nerves out before slowly ramping things up.

I jump out of warm-up and try to have a hot shower to get warm, and then put on my suit. At this point, I am just trying to calm myself down and relax as much as possible. Breathing is my best friend as I try to sit down and rest my legs.

Then, I head out to pool deck, and all my nerves disappear, and my adrenaline starts pumping. From there, I just go do my thing.
